At the end of October 2025, the 4th Squadron of the 1st Foreign Cavalry Regiment (1er REC) departed Mayotte in the Indian Ocean. The unit had been deployed there since July of this year, serving as the 1st Company of the 5th Foreign Regiment (5e RE).

Autonomous Battalion of the 5th Foreign Infantry Regiment (BFC 5) – 1945-1946
In northern Vietnam in the autumn of 1945, a new unit was established, bringing together the surviving members of the 5th Foreign Infantry Regiment (5e REI) who remained in the area at the time of Japan’s surrender. Though virtually unknown today (unlike the 5e REI’s much better-documented marching battalion – BM 5 – formed in China), it was the first Foreign Legion formation to reappear within the borders of French Indochina after World War II, reaffirming the Legion’s enduring presence in this territory.

2e REI, 2e REG: Dog Fighter 2025
In early October 2025, two Foreign Legion regiments – the 2nd Foreign Infantry Regiment (2e REI) and the 2nd Foreign Engineer Regiment (2e REG) – took part in the multinational military exercise Dog Fighter 2025, hosted by France’s 132nd Canine Infantry Regiment (132e RIC), the only unit of its kind in France and the largest military working dog regiment in Europe.
85 years ago: Foreign Legion reconnaissance regiment was deactivated
85 years ago, in late September 1940, a Foreign Legion reconnaissance regiment was deactivated in Tunisia after taking part in the 1940 Battle of France. Little known today, it was the only Legion unit in that campaign composed entirely of active-duty legionnaires.

4e RE: 2025 Foreign Legion Half Marathon
On October 4, 2025, the 47th edition of the Semi-Marathon de la Légion Étrangère took place in Castelnaudary, a town in southern France. This prestigious annual event, free and open to runners of all genders, attracted nearly 1,000 participants for the half marathon and 300 more for the 6.25 mi (10 km) race. As usual, it was organized by the 4th Foreign Regiment (4e RE), the school of the French Foreign Legion.
3e REI: 2025 Elite SAED Selection
The 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment (3e REI) of the Foreign Legion in French Guiana, South America, is currently conducting its annual selection for new members of the elite Dismounted Combat Support Platoon (SAED). This demanding process identifies those capable of operating particularly in tropical jungle terrain, where the 3e REI is primarily deployed.
13e DBLE: 2025 Heavy Mortar Platoon
In late August and early September 2025, heavy mortars from the 13th Foreign Legion Demi-Brigade (13e DBLE) conducted three weeks of intensive training at the CEITO military range at Camp Larzac, the regiment’s home base.
