In early December 2023, French Foreign Legion combat engineers with the 1st Foreign Engineer Regiment (1er REG) and the 2nd Foreign Engineer Regiment (2e REG) commemorated once again their patron, Saint Barbara (Sainte Barbe in French).
The celebrations took place, for the 1er REG, in Mourmelon-le-Grand, a commune in northeastern France with a military area situated nearby, the site of Exercise BIA 23. As for the 2e REG, the regiment celebrated its holiday at its own base, Quartier Maréchal Koenig, located close to Saint Christol in southeastern France.
Officially, the Feast of Saint Barbara is annually celebrated (in the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Church) on December 4. However, the legionnaires very often have to change the date of the traditional celebrations, because of their service duties.
