2e REP: With a local tribe in New Caledonia

See an official reportage published by the French Army that covers the trip of a platoon with the 5th Company, 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment (2e REP) to a remote village in New Caledonia, Pacific Ocean. The week-long trip occurred in September 2023, during the unit’s standard four-month deployment to this special overseas collectivity of France.

The 2e REP legionnaires (a combined detachment made up of the 4th and 5th Company elements) spent the four months in New Caledonia between June and October 2023, alongside two another Legion units. Apart from training in Australia, the paratroopers carried out the usual military tasks that these deployments require, including maintaining a French presence in the region, participating in military maneuvers, and carrying out construction work.

A trip of a French military unit to a local tribe village in New Caledonia is seen as a necessity to understand the local environment. The usual tasks of these trips are to get close to the locals, meet their culture and daily life, and improve the infrastructure of their village. This time, the 2e REP men visited the village of Hienghène in the northeastern part of the main island. The village, a six-hour bus ride away from their military base, is inhabited by the Lewaarap tribe. Watch the video.

PS: Note that the legionnaires seeking refuge in the Legion have their faces blurred.
