2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment

2e REP insignia2e Régiment Étranger de Parachutistes, 2e REP. The only airborne regiment of the French Foreign Legion and, currently, its largest unit. The regiment is stationed near the town of Calvi, Corsica. It moved there from Bou-Sfer, Algeria, in 1967. It is universally recognized for its participation in the Battle of Kolwezi in May 1978.

The unit was constituted in Algeria (as the battalion, 2e BEP) in October 1948. After the war in Indochina (1946-54), the battalion returned to Algeria to be reorganized and redesignated. It became the 2e REP and was participating in the Algerian War (1954-62). In the late 1960’s, the unit left Africa and was placed in Corsica.

During its history, the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment integrated men of another two Legion airborne units: the 3e REP (in 1955) and 1er REP (in 1961).

In recent decades, the men of the 2e REP took part in conflicts and operations in Iraq, ex-Yugoslavia, Chad, Ivory Coast, Afghanistan, Central African Republic, Mali or Niger.
