Since June 2022, the 5th Company of the French Foreign Legion’s 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment (2e REP) has been deployed to New Caledonia, a special overseas collectivity of France in the southwest Pacific Ocean, east of Australia.
The legionnaires with the 5th Company have deployed to New Caledonia for the so-called Short Duration Mission (MCD) that usually lasts four months. They became Parachute Company (COMPARA) of the New Caledonia Pacific Marine Infantry Regiment (RIMaP-NC). The COMPARA is based at Plum, in the South Province of Grande Terre, the principal island of the New Caledonia archipelago. It is composed of rotational airborne elements coming from France every four months.
In New Caledonia, the usual tasks of the RIMaP-NC are maintaining order and a French presence in the region, daily training, working in support of a local infrastructure, or conducting military exercises with Australian and New Zealander soldiers.
As a matter of interest, the 5th Company 2e REP spent four months in New Caledonia also last year, in 2021. During that period, the 2e REP men trained with Australian soldiers.
