The 11th of November marks in France the Armistice Day, when the entire nation commemorate the end of hostilities of World War I. As every year, even the French Foreign Legion units commemorated the 101st Armistice Day on November 11, 2019, and remembered the 36,000 legionnaires and foreign volunteers being killed or wounded during the war. In September and October 2019, for four weeks, the legionnaires from the 1st Foreign Engineer Regiment (1er REG) of the French Foreign Legion were training in Spain, alongside their comrades-sappers from the Spanish Legion. Both well-known Legions meet together from time to time, to participate in joint exercises, as partners within the NATO alliance.

Legionnaires of the French Foreign Legion’s 1st Foreign Engineer Regiment (1er REG) are currently being deployed for four months to Estonia, a Baltic state in Northern Europe. They participate in Mission Lynx, part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s Baltic Enhanced Forward Presence (EFP) to protect NATO’s member state. In the country, the legionnaires made part of an international composite task force under the British leadership. In late July 2019, besides other military training and exercises, the British prepared for their colleagues from the 1er REG a joint engineering exercise, called Phoenix Tutor.
On the 14th July 2019, Foreign Legion regiments participated in ceremonies in their garrison towns to celebrate the French National Day (called Bastille Day in the English-speaking world). See some nice images.
Since the 20th May, Foreign Legion combat engineers of the 1st Foreign Engineer Regiment (1er REG) have participated in an annual joint military exercise called CIADA. The primary aim is to maintain their operational readiness and to train cooperation within a combined task force.
On April 30, 2019, the French Foreign Legion commemorated the 156th anniversary of the Battle of Camerone, the legendary and most important event in its history.
