Two weeks ago, on January 29, 2025, a company from the 1st Foreign Engineer Regiment (1er REG) officially began its short-term deployment (MCD) to the Caribbean Sea. It would remain there for four months.
The combat engineers of the 2nd Company were assigned to the 3rd Marine Infantry Regiment (33e RIMa) and became its 1st Company. The regiment is stationed in Martinique, an overseas region of France in the eastern Caribbean Sea. Consisting of an HQ company, two rotational companies (1st, 2nd) and two reserve companies, the regiment is tasked with a wide range of missions, from maintaining order and the French presence in the region (French Antilles) to reinforcing the troops in neighboring French Guiana. It also carries out guarding of the airport in Fort-de-France, the capital of Martinique, as part of anti-terrorist Operation Sentinelle. In addition, the units of the regiment can be deployed on an emergency basis anywhere in the Caribbean. The regional Aquatic & Forest Training Center (CNEF) is operated by the regiment.
Martinique is a tropical island, part of the archipelago of the (French) Antilles. It is located north of Venezuela and bordering the Atlantic Ocean, around 190 miles (300 km) east of Puerto Rico.
The 1er REG legionnaires are based at Fort Desaix in Fort-de-France.
Currently, 1er REG detachments are also deployed to New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean and Djibouti in the Horn of Africa.
