French Foreign Legion in Syria – the 6th Foreign Infantry Regiment

Syria, Homs, Damascus. Names we are hearing regularly in these days of 2012-13. It is very interesting to discover the French Foreign Legion and its legionnaires were serving at these places for decades. In 1939, the Legion units serving in Syria were transformed into the 6th Foreign Infantry Regiment and just based at Homs and Damascus. In 1941, it was the only Foreign Legion regiment which remained loyal to the French Vichy regime (cooperating with Hitler). Camerone 2013 – 150th anniversary of the Battle of Camerone

On April 30, the French Foreign Legion will celebrate a Camerone Day, the most important day for all legionnaires. This year it will be more festive because of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Camerone. The festival is also open for public.

Legionnaires of the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment (2e REP) have been operating in Mali for 2 months exactly. Since January 28, when they jumped on Timbuktu. In these days, the legionnaires are operating in the Adrar mountains in northeastern Mali. They are patrolling and searching hideouts of Islamic rebels in this area. See some images of their work…

Legionnaires invaded Britain

About a week ago, 200 legionnaires invaded Britain in Gosport, Hampshire (opposite Portsmouth). These legionnaires were a part of the French troops, comprising more than 500 men, participated in a military training exercise.

Anniversary of creation of the French Foreign Legion

On March 10, 2013, the French Foreign Legion will celebrate the 182nd anniversary of its creation. Following the suggestion of Minister of War (Ministre secrétaire d’État au département de la Guerre) Jean-de-Dieu Soult of March 9, King Louis Philippe presented a new royal ordinance in Paris on March 10, 1831, in which he ordered establishment of the Foreign Legion.

Roughly once a week I receive e-mails asking me about the accurate age limit that can qualify/disqualify their authors for joining the French Foreign Legion. Is the age limit 17 or 18 years? Is the age limit 39 or 40 years? Which are the Foreign Legion age requirements? Help me, please!
