DLEM: Activities in August 2021
The Foreign Legion Detachment in Mayotte (DLEM) is a lesser-known Foreign Legion unit that is stationed in Mayotte, an island in the Indian Ocean, and an overseas department and region of France. See the unit’s activities in August 2021.
2e REG: 2021 Mine detection in Mali
In August 2021, a route clearance group of legionnaires from the French Foreign Legion’s 2nd Foreign Engineer Regiment (2e REG) was involved in a mine detection mission in Mali, West Africa, in support of a French military logistics convoy. One of them, a 21-year-old legionnaire named Oleksandr, from Eastern Europe, detected an explosive device set there by local terrorists.
2e REP: 5th Company men train in Australia
In mid-August 2021, a detachment from the French Armed Forces in New Caledonia (FANC) went to Australia to participate in Exercise Diamond Dagger. The detachment is composed of two officers and 26 legionnaires from the French Foreign Legion’s 5th Company, 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment (2e REP), the youngest combat company of the regiment, specialized in desert warfare. They have been to New Caledonia on the four-month Short-duration Mission (MCD).
1er REG: 2021 FTS Instruction Platoon
In July and August 2021, an initial regimental instruction was organized for fresh legionnaires who recently joined the 1st Foreign Engineer Regiment (1er REG), after their four-month basic training in Castelnaudary, school of the Foreign Legion.
3e REI: 2021 Introduction Course
Every year between May and September, the 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment (3e REI) admits new arrivals who are to serve with this prestigious unit in South America’s French Guiana. Before their definitive assignment to the regiment, they have to pass an initial introduction course in the jungle.
2e REI: 1st Company in the Indian Ocean
Since late April 2021, the 1st Company of the 2nd Foreign Infantry Regiment (2e REI) have been deployed to Réunion, an island situated in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar. The island is an overseas department and region of France.
2e REP: A rare 1992 documentary
See an exceptional documentary dedicated to the French Foreign Legion’s 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment (2e REP), produced by the regiment itself in late 1992. 2021 Bastille Day Military Parade
This Wednesday marked Bastille Day, the French National Day of the 14th July. As usually, a military parade occurred in Paris that day. While the previous year was the parade significantly reduced, due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the popular event was back to normal this year. As always, the French Foreign Legion was represented.
