French Foreign Legion: 185th Anniversary
On March 10, 2016, the French Foreign Legion commemorates the 185th anniversary of its founding on March 10, 1831. That day, a decree of the Council of State ratified the royal ordinance signed by Louis Philippe, the King of the French, on March 9. In the Article 1re of this three-article ordinance, the king authorized to form a Legion of Foreigners (Légion d’Etrangers) inside France.
2e REI: More VBCI vehicles
The 2nd Foreign Infantry Regiment (2e REI), a motorized infantry unit of the French Foreign Legion stationed at Nimes (southern France), was reinforced by another 12 VBCI armored vehicles. The new ones arrived at the regiment on February 26, 2016.
13e DBLE: The strength of 1,300 men in 2018
During summer 2016, the 13th Demi-Brigade of the Foreign Legion (13e DBLE) of the French Foreign Legion would leave the United Arab Emirates to be stationed in mainland France.
4e RE: Training at CENTAC 2016
Currently, around 600 legionnaires from the 4th Foreign Regiment (4e RE), the training unit of the French Foreign Legion consisting of about 1,600 men now and based at Castelnaudary (southern France), are participating in military training at CENTAC (Combat Training Center), placed at Camp de Mailly, the base of the 5th Dragoon Regiment (5e RD).

34th anniversary of the Mont Garbi accident
February 3. This day marks the 34th anniversary of the Mont Garbi accident, in which 29 members of the French Foreign Legion were killed, including a whole platoon of the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment (2e REP). The accident occurred in Djibouti, Africa. For the Legion, the 3rd February 1982 remains the most tragic day since the end of the Battle of Dien Bien Phu (1954).
2e REG: Tribute to the six killed legionnaires
On Tuesday, January 26, 2016, the Foreign Legion’s 2nd Foreign Engineer Regiment (2e REG) held a ceremony to pay tribute to the six legionnaires killed in an avalanche in the French Alps. The ceremony took place at Quartier Maréchal Koenig, 2e REG’s headquarters in Saint-Christol, in southeastern France.
2e REG: Sixth legionnaire dies after avalanche in the Alps
On Monday, January 25, 2016, the sixth legionnaire who had been caught in the avalanche in the French Alps died from his injuries. He was one of the 14 members of the Foreign Legion’s 2nd Foreign Engineer Regiment (2e REG) affected by the avalanche during basic mountain warfare training.

2e REG: Five legionnaires killed in the Alps
On Monday, January 18, 2016, 14 legionnaires from the Foreign Legion’s 2nd Foreign Engineer Regiment (2e REG) were caught in an avalanche while crossing the Petit Argentier saddle in the French Alps. They were taking part in basic mountain warfare training. Five legionnaires were killed. Nine were injured, including two seriously.
