In early September 2022, a group of instructors with the Foreign Legion Detachment in Mayotte (DLEM) returned from Madagascar, a large island in the Indian Ocean located south-east of Mayotte. In Madagascar, the men provided military training to local soldiers.
Members of the HQ & Logistics Company, ten DLEM officers and legionnaires formed an Operational Training Detachment (DIO) spent a week on the “Red Island” (Madagascar’s nickname), between August 24 and September 2. Their task was to train seventy Malagasy marines from the 2nd Marine Infantry Battalion (2e BIMa). The legionnaires were teaching the marines the necessary know-how in the fields of shooting, urban warfare, hand-to-hand high-intensity combat, and first aid.
This mission was a result of the continued partnership between the French and Malagasy armed forces commands. The DLEM deploys DIO detachments to Madagascar on regular basis. The Legion unit deploys the same instruction detachments also to other nations in the region who had previously been part of the French Empire, to maintain good ties with them.
