Since March 16, 2022, the men of the Foreign Legion Detachment in Mayotte (DLEM) have been deployed to the Glorioso Islands, a French overseas territory in the Indian Ocean, located north of Madagascar.
The detachment provided by the DLEM’s HQ & Logistics Company (CCL) and led by a Warrant Officer will stay three weeks on the islands, until April 8. Then, the men will be replaced by a company of Chasseurs Alpins arriving from France for a regular four-month deployment to Mayotte.
In fact, the DLEM is divided into a permanent personnel unit (CCL company) and a unit consisting of elements coming from France and rotating every four months (Infantry Combat Company). The latter usually carry out missions outside Mayotte, including maintaining a French presence on the outlaying French islands. However, when there is a disruption in the presence of rotating infantry elements coming from France, permanent personnel of the DLEM take over this duty. With pleasure, of course.
