In May 2020, fresh legionnaires recently arriving to the 1st Foreign Engineer Regiment (1er REG) after their basic training at Castelnaudary, they took part in an initial regimental instruction at Camp Caylus in southern France.
Led by a Lieutenant, the instruction platoon (FTS) was composed of 9 NCOs and around 60 fresh legionnaires. During two weeks, they were trained in all basic military skills, as shooting with firearms, throwing grenades, outdoor combat tactics, urban warfare tactics, giving first aid etc.
In the first half of the year 2020, around 600 legionnaires of the 1er REG were deployed overseas.
