1er REG: Egypt, Djibouti and Mozambique

In March 2019, legionnaires-sappers of the French Foreign Legion’s 1st Foreign Engineer Regiment (1er REG) on board of the Tonnerre, the French amphibious assault helicopter carrier, left France’s Toulon to be shipped to Africa to carry out different missions.

In the Red Sea, the men of the 4th Company, 1er REG took part in a joint military landing exercise on the Tawila Island of Egypt, alongside Egyptian troops.

In the Horn of Africa, the 4th Company, 1er REG participated in another joint military exercise in Djibouti, to train cooperation within a combined task force, together with 21e RIMa (France’s Infatry Marines).

Finally, in Mozambique, a country located in Southeast Africa bordered by the Indian Ocean, the legionnaires-sappers took part in a mission to support local population affected by Cyclone Idai, one of the worst tropical cyclones on record to affect Africa (March 2019). In this mission, the 1er REG men worked alongside their comrades from DLEM, whose military base is located east of Mozambique.

By the way, the DLEM detachment in Mozambique was composed of legionnaires from 13e DBLE, who form a rotational company of the DLEM now.

Foreign volunteers asking for service in the Legion know well that there are not so many armies around to offer them the possibility to see the world.
