Since January 2019, the 3rd Company of the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment (2e REP), the only airborne unit of the French Foreign Legion, has been deployed to New Caledonia, an overseas territory of France in the Pacific Ocean.
In New Caledonia, the 3rd Company (an amphibious company of the regiment), 2e REP formed a rotational Parachute Company of the Pacific Marine Infantry Regiment (RIMaP). This regiment is to maintain a French presence in this special collectivity of France in the southwest Pacific Ocean, located about 750 miles (1,200 km) east of Australia. The legionnaires would spend four months there.
