In June 2018, the legionnaires-alpinists of the 2nd Company, 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment (2e REP) conducted a three-week course to gain a mountain badge. The course took place in the mountains of Corsica, an island located south-east of mainland France and the homeland to the Legion’s paratroopers.
The alpinists of the only airborne unit of the French Foreign Legion participated in the mountain course to be awarded with the BAM (Military Alpinism Badge). They spent three weeks in the mountains and valleys of Corsica, close to Monte Cinto (the highest mountain of Corsica with 8,878 ft / 2,706 m), Paglia Orba or Punta Artica.
The legionnaires were trained in rope techniques, climbing, abseiling or evacuation on stretcher. They also carried out marches in the mountains, including an almost 40-mile-long (60 km) final march to gain their badge.
