In early February 2019, the 1st Foreign Engineer Regiment (1er REG), one of the two French Foreign Legion engineer regiments, has received its first unarmored 4×4 lightweight multipurpose tactical vehicles Masstech T4.
Some ten of Toyota Land Cruiser-based new vehicles are the first delivery for the regiment. They have to replace the old Peugeot P4 vehicles, used in the Foreign Legion since the early 1990s (which replaced the WWII Jeeps back then). By the way, the Foreign Legion’s 2e REP was the very first unit of the French Army to receive the Masstech T4, in April 2017.
In December 2018, the 1er REG’s engineer colleagues from 2e REG received their first Ford Everest-based VT4 vehicle. Even these light multipurpose five-door off-road cars have to replace the P4s.
Currently, the French Army uses several types of new vehicles (including Britain’s Land Rover) to replace the old Peugeots.
