French troops placed in Mali participate in numerous operations to find out last rebel’s hideouts or to protect already cleared regions. The French Army has released a few new images from such operations.
Netero and Météorite operations in Mali
Some images from Operation Netero and Operation Météorite. The operations took place in Mali last month (July). During two weeks of Operation Netero, three companies of legionnaires (together with Malian and Nigerian troops) were searching for rebels east and southeast of Gao, in the 100km x 100km (62×62 miles) large area.
2e REI is in Mali now
As the AALE (Fellowship of Foreign Legion veterans) of Nimes has informed, roughly 300 legionnaires of the 2nd Foreign Infantry Regiment (2e REI) of the Foreign Legion left its base and has been engaged in Operation Serval in Mali last week.

Legionnaires of the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment (2e REP) have been operating in Mali for 2 months exactly. Since January 28, when they jumped on Timbuktu. In these days, the legionnaires are operating in the Adrar mountains in northeastern Mali. They are patrolling and searching hideouts of Islamic rebels in this area. See some images of their work…

Yesterday, on 19th February 2013, the French Ministry of Defence announced that the second French soldier was killed in action in Mali. It was sergent-chef Harold Vormezeele, a non-commissioned officer of the commandos of the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment.

French Foreign Legion in Mali
French forces are preparing for a possible ground assault in Mali against al-Qaida-linked rebels who have continued to push south despite of French aerial bombardments. France has put more than 700 soldiers including the legionnaires on the ground in Mali since it began its rapid deployment January 11, 2013 at the request of the Malian government.
