Since June 2023, three regiments of the French Foreign Legion had some of their legionnaires deployed to New Caledonia, a special overseas collectivity of France in the southwest Pacific Ocean, east of Australia. Among them were men of the 1st Company, 1st Foreign Engineer Regiment (1er REG). Before their departure back to France, they managed to improve their camp.
The 1er REG men (1st Company in the majority, including the captain, but also CA Support Company elements) were assigned to the New Caledonia Pacific Marine Infantry Regiment (RIMaP-NC), and made part of its Combined Arms Company (COMIA). The regiment, as the other French overseas units, is composed of rotational elements usually rotating every four months.
Stationed at Camp Broche in Plum, in the South Province of the island, the Legion combat engineers were carrying out both operational and construction tasks. They were supported by the cavalrymen from the 1st Spahi Regiment (1er RS) who also made part of the COMIA company.
Before their departure back to France this October, the 1er REG and 1er RS men managed to build a concrete walkway with stairs in the camp, connecting the mess hall and the headquarters. The work was achieved in four weeks.
