2e REI + 1er REG: Legionnaires finished their mission in Estonia

After four months spent in Estonia, legionnaires left this Baltic state and returned to France. The detachments from the 2nd Foreign Infantry Regiment (2e REI) and 1st Foreign Engineer Regiment (1er REG) were sent to Estonia to participate in Mission Lynx.

The legionnaires arrived in Estonia in early August 2017, to replace a previous French contingent and to operate within a battlegroup, based at an Estonian town of Tapa and led by the British. Mission Lynx is a part of NATO’s Baltic Enhanced Forward Presence (EFP) to protect and reassure NATO’s member state of its security.

In December 2017, the French detachment had to left Estonia and was transported to Rukla in Lithuania, some 370 miles (600 km) south of Tapa. In Rukla, newly arrived French elements from France have been part (since early January) of a multinational brigade led by German officers. The brigade would stay in Lithuania for next eight months. The legionnaires returned to France in late December.
