2e REP: 2024 Regimental colors’ decoration

At Calvi in Corsica on April 30, 2024, the regimental colors of the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment (2e REP), the only airborne unit of the French Foreign Legion, were decorated.

The decoration ceremony took place at the regiment’s Camp Raffalli on Camerone Day, during the festivities commemorating the epic 1863 Battle of Camerone. The regimental colors of the 2e REP were awarded the Military Valor Cross with a palm, which represents the newly earned sixth citation, as well as the olive in the colors of the Legion of Honor and the Military Medal (red/green-yellow) on the Fourragère in the colors of the Military Valor. The 2e REP thus became the first unit within the French Armed Forces to earn such award.

The regimental colors were decorated by General Thierry Burkhard, the incumbent head of the French Armed Forces, who started his military career in the same regiment, in 1989, as a young platoon leader. At Camp Raffalli, he was accompanied by General Christopher G. Cavoli, head of the United States European Command and the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, the second-highest military position within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
