As we informed earlier, three regiments of the French Foreign Legion have deployed their men to New Caledonia in the southwest Pacific Ocean, east of Australia, since June 2023. The legionnaires should stay in this special overseas collectivity of France for four months, as is common practice for the so-called short duration mission (MCD). See some new images from taken during their deployment in August.
All the three detachments are part of the New Caledonia Pacific Marine Infantry Regiment (RIMaP-NC), as its rotational elements. The regiment’s Motorized Company (COMMOTO) is now made up of the 1st Company, 2nd Foreign Infantry Regiment (2e REI) (see the previous article), the Parachute Company (COMPARA) is made up of the 4th Company (and maybe even the 5th Coy men), 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment (2e REP), while part of the Combined Arms Company (COMIA) is made up of the men from the 1st Company, 1st Foreign Engineer Regiment (1er REG) who constitute the Support Platoon and the Combat Engineer Platoon.
The legionnaires are stationed at Camp Nandai, located near Bourail, in the central part of the main island, and at Camp Broche in Plum, in the South Province of the island.
The usual tasks for the RIMaP-NC are maintaining order and a French presence in the region, daily training, working in support of the local population, or conducting joint military exercises with American, Australian or New Zealander soldiers. As did the 2e REP men in Australia a month ago.
