In May 2023, an operational training detachment (DIO) of the Foreign Legion Detachment in Mayotte (DLEM) provided military training to local soldiers in Botswana, Southern Africa.
The detachment deployed to Botswana from May 10 to 26. Made up mostly of NCOs from a company of the 13e DBLE, currently deployed to Mayotte, they were commanded by Captain Ribaira. Their mission took place in Francistown in northeastern Botswana, home to the 24th Infantry Battalion, Botswana Defence Force. There, the legionnaires were teaching about sixty Botswanan soldiers the fundamentals in the fields of combat shooting instruction, hand-to-hand combat adapted to high-intensity combat), first aid, combat procedures in the context of peacekeeping operations and counter-improvised explosive device countermeasures.
At the end of the training, the Botswanan infantrymen were awarded a certificate of proficiency. The skills acquired over these two weeks will be extremely useful when they are deployed on an imminent peacekeeping mission in Mozambique.
The last DIO mission in Botswana, carried out by the DLEM, occurred in September 2021.
