In Castelnaudary in mid-November 2022, the officers, NCOs, legionnaires and enlisted volunteers of the 4th Foreign Regiment (4e RE) celebrated the 102nd anniversary of the regiment’s creation.
Activated in North Africa’s Morocco on November 15, 1920, as the 4th Foreign Infantry Regiment (4e REI, 1920-1964), the current “school of the Legion” has been based in Castelnaudary since November 1976, while adopting the title, history and traditions of the old 4e REI in 1980.
The festivities of the anniversary of its creation included the VELITE challenges, during which the best won the gold VELITE regimental insignia and the right to wear it, as well as the joint run of almost 9 miles (14 km) through the town.
The main ceremony at the regiment’s parade ground took place on November 14. It was presided by General Lardet, the current commander of the Foreign Legion. During the ceremony, the 4th Platoon 2nd Enlisted Volunteer Company obtained the sacred white kepi, recited their oath, and thus became new legionnaires.
Upon awarding decorations and the VELITE insignia, and handing over black kepi to authorized senior corporals with more than 17,5 years of service, the entire regiment and guests enjoyed a joint meal.
Among the guests were Brigadier General Cyril Youchtchenko, Deputy General Officer of the Southern Defense and Security Zone and former head of the 13e DBLE, Mr. Patrick Maugard, Mayor of Castelnaudary, and Mrs. Marie-Laure Buisson, the regiment’s charming godmother.
