2e Régiment Étranger de Génie, 2e REG. The newest regiment of the French Foreign Legion, nicknamed the “Mountain Regiment.” Since its activation in 1999, it has been stationed in the Quartier Maréchal Koenig near Saint Christol, at the former site of the French strategic nuclear missiles in southeastern France.
The regiment was created on July 1, 1999 as a combat engineering unit (see 2e REG: The origins). It is assigned to the 27th Mountain Infantry Brigade. The regiment draws its lineage from Legion engineering units serving during the First Indochina War (1946-54).
The 2e REG has already participated in several operations and missions, including those in ex-Yugoslavia, Ivory Coast, Martinique, Afghanistan, Mali, and Niger.
Current structure of the 2nd Foreign Engineer Regiment
The regiment is divided (in 2024) into 7 companies and consists of about 1,000 men, including a small number of detached personnel from non-Legion units. A reserve company consisting of non-Legion reservists is also assigned to the regiment.
The 2nd Foreign Engineer Regiment carries out a variety of construction and demolition tasks under combat conditions in support of combat units (demining, opening passages, etc.) and fulfills these tasks in mountain terrain under extreme climatic conditions. The 2e REG legionnaires are also trained in urban warfare.
The regiment includes two commando units: Mountain Commando Group (Groupement de Commando de Montagne, GCM) and Engineer Combat Divers (PCG, formerly DINOPS). Two GCM groups and a PCG team are assigned to the Surveillance & Direct Action Platoon (SRIO) of the 2e REG. Also within the regiment is an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team composed of EOD specialists trained to deal with the disarmament and disposal of highly explosive munitions. The 2e REG serves within the 27th Mountain Infantry Brigade (27e BIM).
