Between March 17 and 28, 2025, the 1st Foreign Engineer Regiment (1er REG) conducted Terra Nostra, a major open-terrain military exercise across the Gard department. Led by Colonel Rémy Chabaud, the regiment’s commanding officer, the exercise engaged nearly 500 soldiers, over 100 military vehicles, and a fleet of river boats in a complex, multi-phase scenario. The Foreign Legion’s YouTube channel recently published a video dedicated to this operation.
Exercise Terra Nostra spanned the area between Orange and Laudun-L’Ardoise (the 1er REG’s garrison town) and included strategic foot and vehicle movements, urban and rural zone control, and two tactical crossings of the Rhône River – on March 18–19 and again on March 24. To enhance the realism of operations, the 1er REG was reinforced by other French Army and Foreign Legion units, including the 1er REC and 2e REI.
