3e REI: Camp Fabert Returns to Service

In mid-March 2026, the 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment (3e REI), based in Kourou, French Guiana, officially reopened Camp Fabert following several months of renovation work.

Led by Captain Olivier, legionnaires from the regiment’s HQ Company (CCL) carried out extensive repairs and improvements across the site, including the construction of a new carbet, a traditional open-sided wooden shelter commonly used in the Amazon region. The upgraded camp will now host Jungle Warfare and Survival Training (SIVFE) courses and support the operational readiness of units deployed to this French overseas territory.

Camp Fabert is located approximately 12 miles (20 km) southwest of Kourou. It was originally built in May 1976 by the 3e REI’s 2nd Company. Initially known simply as a “jungle camp,” it became the first site of what would later be known as the Equatorial Forest Training Center (CEFE), where French and allied troops undergo specialized jungle training. Notably, the site was already known by this name in the early 1980s.

Jungle courses continued at Camp Fabert until late 1987, when the CEFE relocated to Camp Szuts after its renovation. Camp Szuts, a former base of the regiment’s Heavy Equipment Company (CE), remains the current home of the training center today.
