2e REI: Commando training on Réunion

In May 2021, men from the 1st Company, 2nd Foreign Infantry Regiment (2e REI) conducted a “commando course” on Réunion. It is an island situated in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, and an overseas department and region of France. See the video.

The legionnaires are currently deployed to the island, within a mission of the Indian Ocean Southern Zone Armed Forces (FAZSOI), whose part is also DLEM. Their tasks are to protect the territory and if needed, to intervene if there is a danger.

In the western part of the island, at Cap La Houssaye, a commando obstacle course is run for French troops, as well as for foreign allied forces (e.g. from Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles or Botswana), by the 2nd Marine Infantry Parachute Regiment (2e RPIMa), a French overseas unit consisting of periodically rotating companies. Two platoons of the 1st Company, 2e REI took part in the course this month.
