Between October 8-12, the 1st Foreign Regiment (1er RE) conducted its annual military exercise called Vaillant (Valiant). This year, Exercise Vaillant took place at Camp des Garrigues, a military camp near Nimes in southeastern France.
For the most part, 1er RE legionnaires are carrying out administrative tasks within the Foreign Legion HQ stationed in Aubagne, close to Marseille. The majority of them are occupied by the needs of the Legion’s Command or by ensuring the selection of volunteers wanting to serve with the Legion.
However, to keep their military capabilities and operational readiness, the legionnaires of the 1er RE are obliged to participate such military exercises on a regular basis.
In Exercise Vaillant 2018, the legionnaires trained military tactics in urban warfare (to be ready for Operation Sentinelle to guard French towns). Their platoon leaders trained commanding of their men and communications with them in unexpected situations. Then, every platoon have to provide first aid to a legionnaire playing a soldier being wounded in the battlefield.
