Since early October 2025, a company from the 2nd Foreign Engineer Regiment (2e REG) have been deployed on a four-month mission to Martinique, as part of the regular troop rotation in the Caribbean.
The deployment of the combat engineers focuses on reinforcing the operational capabilities in the region and contributing to routine security and cooperation tasks across the French Antilles. The legionnaires serve within the 33rd Marine Infantry Regiment (33e RIMa), becoming its 1st Company.
During their mission, the 2e REG men were integrated into a humanitarian operation launched after severe storm damage in the Caribbean. They contributed to the transport of food, water, and essential supplies aboard the vessel Dumont d’Urville, supporting relief efforts directed toward populations in Jamaica, affected by Hurricane Melissa. A platoon of the 2e REG moved to Jamaica on board of the vessel. This operation highlights the importance of rapid, coordinated deployment in regions hit by natural disasters and underscores France’s readiness to respond to humanitarian crises worldwide.
The legionnaires’ tasks in Martinique also include training and collaborating with local military units, sharing skills and knowledge in areas such as improvised explosive device (IED) detection and civil protection during crises, thus ensuring long-term stability in the region.
Martinique is a French tropical island, part of the archipelago of the (French) Antilles. It is located north of Venezuela and bordering the Atlantic Ocean, around 190 miles (300 km) east of Puerto Rico.
