1er REC: 2023 Protecting Air Legend

During the last weekend, the legionnaires of the 1st Foreign Cavalry Regiment (1er REC), the only cavalry unit within the current Foreign Legion, were protecting the Air Legend airshow near Paris, as part of the counter-terrorist Operation Sentinelle.

The companies and squadrons (cavalry) of the Legion regiments are regularly deployed under Operation Sentinelle not only to Paris for several weeks (usually six weeks), to patrol the streets and protect the public events or sensitive buildings and institutions. Currently, along with the 1er REC legionnaires, also men of the 2nd Foreign Engineer Regiment (2e REG) patrol the streets of the French capital.

As mentioned, the 1er REC men were protecting the annual airshow which took place during the weekend of September 9-10, 2023, at the Melun-Villaroche aerodrome, 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Paris. The visitors of the show could see legendary and rare aircraft, including the WWII U.S. Airforce aircraft. The legionnaires certainly enjoyed it as well, even though they had to stay on guard.
