Watch an awesome interview released by POVCAST in late January 2023, with Senior Corporal Johnny Leggett telling his experiences serving in the Foreign Legion, including his training and deployments. Born in Scotland, United Kingdom, Johnny joined the Legion in 1979, when he was 21, and left it after 15 years of service, in 1994.
After his basic training in the Foreign Legion Training Regiment (RILE, 4e RE since 1980) in Castelnaudary, Johnny served first with the 1st Foreign Cavalry Regiment (1er REC), where he spent six years, then he moved to Djibouti in the Horn of Africa, to join the 13th Foreign Legion Demi-Brigade (13e DBLE) based there at the time. After two years in Africa, he returned to France and served with the 6th Foreign Engineer Regiment (6e REG, later renamed to 1er REG). With this regiment, he was deployed to the Middle East in 1990 to participate in the Gulf War against Saddam Hussein‘s Iraq. Thereafter, Johnny ended up for two years in French Guiana, posted in the 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment (3e REI).
