25 years ago: Tragic accident involving Foreign Legion recruits in August 2000

25 years ago, on August 7, 2000, a tragic accident occurred near Castelnaudary, France, when a truck carrying recruits from the 4th Foreign Regiment (4e RE), the school of the French Foreign Legion, left the road and crashed into a tree.

The recruits, who were undergoing training, had just finished an exercise with engineering equipment at the isolated Cuin farm, about 20 miles (30 km) from their garrison town. The accident occurred when the driver of one of two Renault TRM 4000 trucks, carrying members of the 2nd Platoon, 2nd Enlisted Volunteer Company (2e CEV), lost control while trying to avoid an oncoming vehicle. The truck, carrying about 20 recruits, swerved off the road, hitting two trees before being stopped by a third, completely demolishing the vehicle. Four of the recruits were killed instantly, while another 11 were injured. Among the injured, five were seriously hurt.

The emergency response was swift. Four helicopters, 100 firefighters, 25 gendarmes, and 40 soldiers from the regiment were mobilized. The first priority was to evacuate the injured, with the most seriously wounded being airlifted to Toulouse’s hospital.

A ceremony held at the 4e RE barracks on August 16, 2000, honored the killed legionnaires. During the event, the victims, as well as the wounded survivors, were awarded the gold National Defense Medal, inscribed with “Légion étrangère.” The families of two of the deceased recruits attended the ceremony.

Unfortunately, one of the seriously hurt recruits, Legionnaire Urano (a Japanese), succumbed to his injuries two days later, on August 18.

The accident remains one of the deadliest in the history of the French Foreign Legion’s training program. While another serious accident involving 4e RE legionnaires occurred in 2013, fortunately no fatalities were reported. However, 12 recruits and a sergeant were wounded in that crash.

Victims of the August 2000 accident:

  • Legionnaire DOLAK S.
  • Legionnaire HARASZTOSI A.
  • Legionnaire RAVALASON A.
  • Legionnaire SMYRNOV S.
  • Legionnaire URANO T.
