4e RE: 2023 Foreign Legion Half Marathon | French Foreign Legion Information

In Castelnaudary (Southern France) on October 7, 2023, the 45th Foreign Legion Half Marathon took place. The annual race is organized by the 4th Foreign Regiment (4e RE) in this Foreign Legion training regiment’s garrison town, and held on the first Saturday in October. The event includes a half marathon (13 miles / 21 km) and 10K race. Its first edition took place in 1977.

The main race has runners travel through the 4e RE headquarters and along the historical Canal du Midi, a 150 mi (240 km) long waterway, considered one of the greatest construction works of the 17th century which helps to link the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. Apart from 900 military personnel (including the enlisted volunteers and fresh legionnaires still doing their basic training), 300 slots for civilian runners are also provided. The teams from the Foreign Legion regiments stationed in mainland France participate every year, too.
