2e REP: 2022 Exercise Manticore

Between September 12 and October 10, 2022, the French Army is conducting a large-scale military exercise, called Manticore. It takes place in several departments of south-central France, including Aveyron and Puy-de-Dôme. Among the more than 3,000 soldiers participating in the exercise are legionnaires from the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment (2e REP), the only airborne unit of the current French Foreign Legion.

According to the French Army officials, the exercise is conducted in a particularly tense international context; it should allow the units to train in conditions close to those of a real war.

Three main formations are taking part in it: the 11th Airborne Brigade (11e BP, including the 2e REP), which deploys to the combat zone with its paratroopers; the Special Forces Land Command, which conducts operations behind enemy lines and with complete discretion; and the 4th Air Assault Brigade (4e BAC), the only French Army formation that uses the helicopter as a combat tool in modern air assault warfare.
