In French Guiana (South America) in mid-September 2020, the French Foreign Legion’s 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment (3e REI) celebrated the regimental holiday, called Fourragere Day. See the nice images of this important event.
The Fourragere Day was commemorated officially on Friday, September 18, at the regiment’s military base Quartier Forget in Kourou.
The 2020 Fourragere Day marked the 102nd anniversary of the Battle of Vauxaillon. The battle occurred in northeastern France on 14 September 1918, on the Western Front of World War I.
This battle broke Germany’s Hindenburg Line, a German important defensive position built in 1916-17, and helped to finish the unfortunate war. The famous regiment was fully participating in that action in the first line (then, as RMLE). The RMLE gained a rare double fourragère and became the most decorated unit of the then French Army. However, at least 275 men were killed (including 10 officers) and another 1,158 men were wounded during this battle.
