On August 6, 2019, another commercial flight into orbit was launched from the space center based at Kourou, French Guiana (South America). As always, the important launch was protected by legionnaires from the Foreign Legion’s 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment (3e REI).
It was already the third flight of Ariane 5 in 2019. Ariane 5 is a European heavy-lift launch vehicle used to deliver payloads into geostationary transfer orbit or low Earth orbit. On August 6, the vehicle had to orbit two telecommunications satellites: Intelsat 39 and the EDRS-C satellite.
The 3e REI was stationed in Kourou, French Guiana in 1975 just to protect France’s Guiana Space Center, the major European spaceport. Since 2008, this mission has been called Operation Titan. During this mission, the legionnaires are supported by an anti-aircraft platoon from the “regular” French Army.
See the men from the 2nd + HQ Company, 3e REI and an anti-aircraft platoon armed by the 93rd Mountain Artillery Regiment (93e RAM), being deployed to French Guiana right now, while protecting the third successful launch of Ariane 5:
