In mid-September 2019, the Foreign Legion’s 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment (3e REI) celebrated their regimental holiday, called Fourragere Day. See the nice images of the event organized in French Guiana (South America), where the famous 3e REI has been stationed since the 1970s.
The Fourragere Day was celebrated officially on Friday, September 13, while the event continued for men and their families until Sunday. Contrary, the traditional Fourragere Day Challenges had begun five days earlier, on Monday, and lasted several days. The regimental run around Kourou, the garrison town, took also place.
The 2019 Fourragere Day marked the 101st anniversary of the Battle of Vauxaillon (northeastern France), which occurred on the Western Front of World War I on 14 September 1918. This battle broke Germany’s Hindenburg Line, a German important defensive position built in 1916-17, and helped to finish the unfortunate war. The famous regiment fully participated in that action in the first line (then, as RMLE). Its legionnaires gained a rare double fourragère and became the most decorated unit of the then French Army. However, the regiment also suffered heavy casualties in the battle. At least 275 men were killed (including 10 officers), another 1,158 men were wounded.
