In mid-August 2019, legionnaires of the 2nd Squadron, 1st Foreign Cavalry Regiment (1er REC) moved to Formiguères, a commune in the Pyrenees mountain range of southern France, at the border with Spain. They were to spend two weeks there.
The French Foreign Legion has owned the chalet at Formiguères for decades. It is mainly used by legionnaires of the 4th Foreign Regiment (4e RE), a training unit of the Legion. Every basic training platoon goes to Formiguères for a week, to spend the time in the mountains. It is seen as a small vacation/holiday for men during their four-month initial instruction.
This time, it’s the 2nd Squadron 1er REC who took advantage of a fresh air to train before a prescribed overseas deployment.
