In late October, the 1st Foreign Regiment (1er RE), the Motherhouse of the French Foreign Legion, celebrated the 55th anniversary of its placement at Aubagne, southern France.
The 1er RE, which serves as the HQ of the Legion, has been placed at Quartier Viénot, Aubagne (close to Marseille) since it left Sidi Bel Abbès, Algeria in September-October 1962. Its regimental standard arrived in Aubagne from Algeria on October 26, 1962.
In the late afternoon of October 26, 2017, in the presence of Gerard Gazay (the mayor of Aubagne), Colonel Guillaume Dujon and his 1er RE legionnaires, including the well-known Foreign Legion Pioneers and the Foreign Legion Music Band, demonstrated an admirable ceremony in the center of the town of Aubagne, to commemorate the 55th anniversary.
