Foreign Legion in French Guiana 2012

French Guiana is an overseas region of France on the North Atlantic coast of South America bordered by Brazil to the east and south and Suriname to the west. There is a French Foreign Legion regiment stationed in French Guiana: the 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment (3e REI). It moved to its current location in French Guiana from Madagascar, Africa, in September 1973. 3e REI is protecting the Centre Spatial Guyanais (Guiana Space Centre).

From 2008 the regiment has been tasked with fighting against illegal gold mining operations. 3e REI also provides a standby force for operations in the region such as in Operation Carbet, Haiti in 2004. It also runs the French Jungle Training Centre (Centre d’entraînement en forêt équatoriale, CEFE) at Regina.
