3e REI: 2022 Fourragere Day

As usual in September, the French Foreign Legion’s 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment (3e REI) celebrated the regimental holiday, called Fourragere Day. See the nice images of this important event.

Fourragere Day was commemorated officially on Friday, September 16, at the regiment’s military base Quartier Forget in Kourou, French Guiana (South America). Sports activities and competitions among regimental companies were traditionally organized, too.

The 2022 Fourragere Day marked the 104th anniversary of the Battle of Vauxaillon. The battle took place in northeastern France on 14 September 1918, during the fighting on the Western Front of World War I.

This battle was very important because the French were able to break Germany’s Hindenburg Line, a German important defensive position built in 1916-1917. Thus, the successful battle helped to end the unfortunate war. At that time, the famous regiment was fully participating in this action in the first line (still under the title of RMLE). Thanks to the battle, the RMLE gained the rare double fourragère and became the most decorated unit of the then French Army. However, at least 275 men of the regiment were killed (including 10 officers) during the battle; another 1,158 men were wounded.
