Since September 11, 2017, legionnaires from the 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment (3e REI), the Foreign Legion’s regiment based in French Guiana, have participated in rescue operations on the island of Saint Martin, in the Caribbean Sea, damaged by Hurricane Irma.
3e REI: Live Fire Exercise in Surinam
Between October 20 and November 04, 2016, the 2nd Company, 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment (3e REI), the Foreign Legion’s regiment based in French Guiana, participated in an military exercise in Surinam, South America.
3e REI: Legionnaires protecting Ariane 5 launch
On November 17, 2016, the Ariane 5 rocket successfully took off from the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. It launched four Galileo satellites into orbit to support Europe’s own satellite navigation system. Legionnaires from the 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment (3e REI), the Foreign Legion’s regiment based in Guiana, protected the launch.
3e REI: 2016 Independence Day Parade in Brazil
On September 7, 2016, legionnaires from the 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment (3e REI) participated in Brazil’s Independence Day Military Parade, which took place in the city of Macapá. Stationed in French Guiana, a country bordering with Brazil, the 3e REI and the Brazilian Army operate often together.

In August 2016, legionnaires from the 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment (3e REI) were involved in two operations – Operation Willau 10 and Operation Foudre 4 – in the deep jungle of French Guiana, South America.
2016: 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Belloy-en-Santerre
On July 4, 2016, the Foreign Legion commemorated the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Belloy-en-Santerre. The battle, which occurred on July 4, 1916 near the river Somme in the Picardy region of northern France, was part of the Battle of Somme, the largest battle of the First World War on the Western Front. That day, hundreds of legionnaires were killed within a few hours, including the American poet Alan Seeger.
