On November 17, 2016, the Ariane 5 rocket successfully took off from the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. It launched four Galileo satellites into orbit to support Europe’s own satellite navigation system. Legionnaires from the 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment (3e REI), the Foreign Legion’s regiment based in Guiana, protected the launch.
Legionnaires from the 2nd Company, 3e REI protected the launch as part of Operation Titan. The operation to protect the Guiana Space Center (CSG) was launched in 2008 and legionnaires have actively participated in. However, the Foreign Legion had protected the center even before. The 3e REI itself was stationed in Kourou in 1973 especially to guard the CSG site.
