From October 19 to 30, 2025, the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment (2e REP) of the French Foreign Legion conducted Exercise Vent d’Automne (Autumn Wind) in Corsica. This annual training aims to enhance combat readiness and interoperability in realistic coastal and urban environments.
Over a two-week period, around 600 legionnaires carried out reconnaissance, obstacle breaching, casualty evacuation, and urban assault missions under challenging conditions, including degraded communications, adverse weather, and sustained physical strain. The exercise tested unit cohesion and adaptability across the Nebbiu and Balagne regions, in the northern part of the island.
A French Air Force C-130 supported parachute insertions, while Corsica’s diverse terrain – from coastal lowlands to mountain vantage points – provided an ideal setting for expeditionary operations. Naval Aviation helicopters and drones supplied real-time intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance to ground elements.
The final phase, held on October 30, featured a coordinated assault in the historic citadel of Calvi, the 2e REP’s garrison town. Legionnaires advanced on foot and in light armored vehicles to secure key positions, conduct simulated hostage rescues, and validate close-quarters combat procedures.
Exercise Vent d’Automne also strengthened inter-service coordination. Joint fires and maneuvers integrated Caesar 155 mm artillery, engineer detachments, and JTAC teams (forward air controllers), underscoring the elite airborne regiment’s role as France’s rapid-response force for high-intensity operations.
Following the exercise, Calvi’s city hall hosted an open house, allowing residents to meet legionnaires and view their vehicles and equipment.
