In late September and early October 2024, both engineers regiments of the French Foreign Legion, the 1st Foreign Engineer Regiment (1er REG) and the 2nd Foreign Engineer Regiment (2e REG), celebrated the anniversary of their creation. See the images.
In the Quartier Général Rollet at Laudun, southern France, on October 12, 2024, the 1er REG celebrated its 40th anniversary. In fact, the regiment was activated as early as July 1, 1984, but officially received its flag a few months later, on October 12. At the time, it was called the 6th Foreign Engineer Regiment (6e REG). The original flag of the 6e REG returned to the regiment and was handed over to the 1er REG colonel during the ceremony. At the same time, the current regimental colors of the regiment were awarded the Military Valor Cross for the unit’s successful participation in Operation Barkhane from 2015-2022.
On July 1, 1999, another engineer regiment of the Foreign Legion was created: the 2e REG. It received its regimental colors on September 30, 1999 (see 2e REG: The origins). Therefore, the 2e REG celebrated its 25th anniversary in the Quartier Maréchal Koenig near Saint Christol, southeastern France, on September 27, 2024. During the ceremony, the entire regiment marched down the base while singing the regimental song, Rien n’empêche. This was very unusual, however. Within the Legion, as a rule, each regimental song is sung standing at attention only.
For the record, following the creation of the second engineer regiment in 1999, the 6e REG was redesignated and became the 1er REG.
Both ceremonies were attended by General Youchtchenko, head of the Foreign Legion.
