As mentioned in the previous article dedicated to Lieutenant Colonel Amilakvari, this year marks the 80th anniversary of the death of this officer who was killed in Egypt on October 24, 1942. He commanded the 13th Foreign Legion Demi-Brigade (13e DBLE). The current colonel of this regiment decided to visit Amilakvari‘s war grave.
The freshly promoted commanding officer of the 13e DBLE, Colonel Thomas Riou, did a visit to the Commonwealth’s El Alamein War Cemetery in Egypt. Members of the Free French Forces, including men of the 13e DBLE, who fought on the British side during WWII, are buried there as well.
Colonel Ruiu, accompanied by three of his legionnaires, made part of a ceremony on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Battle of El Alamein. The ceremony to pay homage to the French veterans was organized by the French ambassador in Egypt, Mr. Baréty. It was held on October 21, 2022. Several French civilian and military authorities were present, too.
