1er REG: Operation Harpie in French Guiana 2015 | French Foreign Legion Information

As stated in Foreign Legion Operations of December 2014, legionnaires from the 1st Company of the 1st Foreign Engineer Regiment (1er REG) are being placed in French Guiana (South America) now. In January 2015, they participated in Operation Harpie.

The Operation Harpie the legionnaires of 1er REG were participated in, has been going on since February 2008, to take action against foreign illegal gold-diggers operating deep in the wild forest-area of Guiana. Around five hundreds of personnel of the French gendarmerie and French Army are involved in the operation.

The legionnaires of 1er REG are occupying Quartier de la Madeleine, the headquarters of the 9th Marine Infantry Regiment (9e RIMa) based in Cayenne, the capital of French Guiana. Cayenne is located about 60 km (40 miles) from Kourou, where the Foreign Legion’s 3e REI is permanently based. The 1er REG legionnaires have been sent to French Guiana for a four-month mission and have become a rotational company of 9e RIMA.
