Monica

Monica is a song of the French Foreign Legion. Monica uses the melody of the German Wehrmacht song “Lebe wohl, du kleine Monika”. It was composed in the early 1940s, with music by Hans Carste and lyrics by Hellmut Boerner. This song was subsequently translated during WWII by members of the Legion of French Volunteers Against Bolshevism (Légion des Volontaires Français, LVF) and published under the title “Au revoir petite Monique”. These men, who included a number of former legionnaires, volunteered for the Eastern Front to fight there against Stalin‘s Soviet Union, alongside Germans.

The Foreign Legion adopted the song in the late 1940s, when it accepted some of these French WWII veterans.

Refrain:
Au revoir, petite Monica,
Nous partons au combat,
Au revoir, petite Monica,
Que tes yeux ne pleurent pas.
Fallérie, fallara, falléri et fallara,
Je ne suis toujours qu’à toi,
Au revoir, petite Monica,
En tout lieux, je pense à toi.

1.
Monica, ma chère compagne,
Nous partirons bientôt,
Le pays est en campagne,
Pour faire les temps nouveaux,
Nous serons victorieux,
Nous serons victorieux

2.
Nous repousserons les Rouge,
Au-delà de l’Oural
Nous repousserons les Rouge,
Sans faire l’esprit de pitié,
Nous serons victorieux,
Nous serons victorieux.
