1er REG, 13e DBLE: Protecting the Seine River during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games Opening Ceremony

Legionnaires from the 1st Foreign Engineer Regiment (1er REG) and the 13th Foreign Legion Demi-Brigade (13e DBLE) were tasked with the protection of the Seine River during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. See some images.

The legionnaires patrolled the river with the 1er REG river craft – EFG Patrol Boat. The 1er REG has been trained for river warfare for some time, it is the first engineering regiment of the French Army to develop river combat capability. That’s why the regiment was chosen for such an important mission. The 13e DBLE men reinforced their comrades as infantrymen on the craft.

In the video below, we can see an interview with a lieutenant colonel from the 1er REG, head of the protection mission, and a captain from the 13e DBLE (for the record, the same officer who organized the last Boxing Show of his regiment), and some images of the 1er REG patrol boats. According to the interview, the legionnaires were tasked not only with the protection of the main opening ceremony, but also with the protection of its rehearsal.

During their mission, which was part of the counter-terrorist Operation Sentinelle, the legionnaires were supported by soldiers of the 61st Artillery Regiment (61e RA), the French Army’s image-based intelligence regiment. Its men use unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) and are equipped with satellite image reception systems.
